Reports indicate that Big Blue offloaded some 300 million shares, or roughly one-quarter of its stake in Lenovo. The sale reduces IBM's total interest in Lenovo below the 10 percent mark. Lenovo burst onto the international computing stage in 2005 with the purchase of IBM's line of desktop and notebook computers and notebook products, including the highly regarded ThinkPad laptop brand. ThinkPad has remained the high-profile performer for Lenovo, which retained IBM's ThinkCentre enterprise PC mark and replaced the struggling Aptiva consumer brand with the 3000 series PC. The move further distances IBM from the desktop computing business it was once literally synonymous with, during a time when second-tier x86 computers were routinely referred to as "IBM clones" or "IBM-compatible." Now a diminishing minority stake is all that remains of IBM's interest in the market it pioneered with the original XT personal computer.

Lenovo Starts a New Engine in Formula One

Lenovo, a leading computer company that creates the best-engineered PCs in the world, today announced a top sponsorship agreement with the AT&T Williams team competing in the Formula One World Championship. A "Lenovo" decal was found on Williams' new 2007 car on January 22, the report said. Lenovo refused to confirm the report with Sina.com. The new car will be unveiled today and Lenovo might become the team's main sponsor, according to the design scheme of the new car. Lenovo might release the information this afternoon, according to the source and the sponsorship might be worth US$40 million a year. William J. Amelio, Lenovo's CEO, said yesterday that the company will announce a new sports sponsor today. He also said Lenovo has prepared an advertisement, which is related to the new sponsorship. As companies look for ways to efficiently use office space, desktop real-estate can quickly become the target of IT managers and business owners. The ThinkCentre A55 SFF desktop is approximately 64 percent smaller than Lenovo’s traditional tower form factor and 25 percent smaller than its conventional small desktop. Its smaller footprint can free up desk space for other items, such as an extra monitor for dual-monitor work environments or a personal printer and scanner. "We are seeing an increased adoption of small form factor desktops in settings such as healthcare, education, financial institutions and call-centers," said Tom Tobul, executive director, desktop marketing, Lenovo.

News Bits: Samsung Releases 60GB 1.8-Inch Hard Drive, Lenovo ...

Samsung recently introduced their 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB per disk capacity and a super-slim form factor that is just 5-millimeters tall. This update to the company's ultraportable X41 Tablet includes a few key upgrades on the usability front, including a touch-screen display, an improved stylus, and the new Active Rotate feature (more on that below). When it's not folded into a tablet, the ThinkPad X60 Tablet also makes a good ultraportable laptop, with a Core Duo processor and decent-size 80GB hard drive. You'll have to pay to have the best tablet on the block, though: the X60 Tablet's price starts at $1,699, but our review unit included a number of upgrades that brought its price to $2,299--and that still didn't include even an external optical drive. If you're looking for a laptop with an optical drive that you can occasionally use as a tablet, look to larger systems such as the Gateway M285-E.

Lenovo tries to step out from Big Blue shadow

Lenovo is trying to consolidate its brand power by removing the IBM logo from popular ThinkPad laptops sold to big corporate customers, local media reported. "We now ask our big customers whether they need the logo. If the answer is no, there won't be IBM marks on the ThinkPads they buy," the Beijing Business Today quoted an unidentified source from the ThinkPad business unit of Lenovo Greater China as saying. Chinese PC giant Lenovo acquired Big Blue's PC unit in 2005. In order to maintain its appeal for global customers, it obtained the right to retain the famous IBM logo on the previously IBM-developed computers, including the Think series, until 2010. Pictures of Lenovo's new ThinkPad X60 without IBM logos have recently appeared on the Internet, drawing speculation about a major branding change for the products.

Lenovo ThinkPad T43 1871 - Pentium M 760 2 GHz - 15

Perfect balance of performance and portability for highly mobile users who work just about anywhere. That's just champion, bonny lad. The R400 vied with Asus for most desirable portable in Las Vegas and has now even won kudos from rival vendor Lenovo on the Chinese giant's bog. Additionally, the Y500 has advanced Dolby Home Theater, a Shuttle Centre for easy navigation between features, a slot-in ODD (a trayless entry for CDs/DVDs) and a TV Tuner card. The Shuttle Center is an audio and video entertainment platform which helps the user navigate between menus without a mouse. The integrated Touch Pad features a wider touch area and provides two modes to avoid the incident touching of Touch Pad when using a mouse. Lenovo says that both business and individual clients can send those types of computers to Lenovo's recycling sites across the country, or they can ask Lenovo's staff to come fetch the devices from their homes or offices. Lenovo will entrust a third party to process and dispose of these collected computers according to relevant Chinese laws and environmental rules, and it will undertake all the relevant cost involved during this process. Chen Shaopeng, senior vice president of Lenovo Group, says that the free recycling service they plan in China is another major step that they have made in environmental protection and it shows Lenovo's responsible attitude towards the society and environment.

Notebook Review : IBM Lenovo 3000 N100

For long, the name IBM has been associated with quality, service and reliability. So when Lenovo bought out the PC division from IBM, certainly many eyebrows were raised, with questions about whether this would impact their QSR (Quality-Service-Reliability) metrics. I did not think up till this point that it would change, but I am quite sadly mistaken. My experience over the past two weeks working on Lenovo laptops and working with their representatives, right from call center people to high-profile men in leading positions like "VP of Web Marketing", has been nothing short of painful, with general sense of I-don't-really-know-what-you-are-talking-about attitude displayed by all and sundry. Given that Lenovo now also markets Thinkpads, one wonders how long will it be before Thinkpads reach the trash-bin too.

State Dept Drops Lenovo, Cites Security Concerns

In another brilliant move by the United States government, nearly 900 Lenovo computers have been removed due to security risks. The computers were planned to be on networks with access to highly classified information. No, they weren't removed because of flaws within the computer, but they were removed is because the US-China Economic and Security Review Commissions showed concern that these PCs could be used for espionage. Get more details after the jump. Even worse, in January 2005 the US Treasury Department was actually asked to investigate the purchase of said Lenovo PCs prior to the purchase because of concerns from the Justice Department. They allowed the purchase to happen, maybe just to spite Americans by wasting more tax-payer money. So, are they trying to say the potential spies are more likely to use Lenovo PCs for thievery rather than Apple or Gateway computers? Or rather, are Lenovo factory employees more likely to install espionage software before the machines get shipped? The State Department sure is talking a lot of techie smack.

IBM Global Financing Helps Saint Leo University Deliver on Lenovo ...

IBM Global Financing, today announced that it will provide a comprehensive leasing solution for Saint Leo University, Florida's first Catholic Institution of higher learning, to help the institution acquire new computers for its more than 13,000 traditional campus and adult continuing education students. .

iPod Success, Lenovo's Harry Potter, Affordable Memorable Gifts

What if Apple and Microsoft had become broad partners? The Lenovo 3000 H series is primarily targeted at the consumers looking for a budget PC. It comes in three different configurations starting from Rs. 25,000 right up to Rs. 35,000. We have the top-most product in that range. Well, let's hop over to the review. Lenevo, most probably, became famous after it bought over the entire PC and laptop manufacturing business from IBM. It is number one PC maker in China and also hopes to do the same trick over here. Budget PC makes up for the majority sales in the Indian market. This sector generally is a very difficult for the branded PC makers to capture, due to lower profit margin and absolutely no-cost for the operating system. Almost 99% of assembled PCs get bundled with pirated software and hence the end consumer doesn't have to bear the cost.

Lenovo ThinkPad goes wide

Hailed as the first ever 15.4-inch widescreen T-series ThinkPad and the lightest among its class, the new T60-series offers consumers a truly versatile laptop for both work and play. The ThinkVantage technologies, which include biometric fingerprint scanning and rescue and recovery, were redesigned to work with the security and backup features offered by Vista. “All of those tools will be tuned up to work with Vista," said Clain Anderson, director of security and affiliated software for the Lenovo software and peripherals business unit.

Lenovo Unveils 350 Euro 22in LCD

It appears that 22 inches is fast becoming the new 20 inches. Following promising and well priced outings from Iiyama, Mirai and the first sighting of Samsungs 225BW anything smaller no longer cuts the mustard. Lenovo is the latest company to spot this growing trend (yes, it does make LCDs) and has entered the field of play with the very promising D221 (I know the pic is small, we're working on it!). Like most 22 inchers on the market the native resolution is an extremely eye friendly/expansive WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) while the 700:1 contrast ratio is above average as is the 5ms response time. Brightness is more typical at 300cd/m2 and the 176 degree horizontal viewing angle is pretty much a defacto these days. Lenovo also supplies the vertical viewing angle (160 degrees) but why youd be straddling your monitor or lying underneath it - without some serious dominatrix/submissive issues - is rather beyond me.

Lenovo Dives into Display Biz with D221 22-inch Monitor

Lenovo is making a bigger splash into the LCD monitor world with the D221 "budget" display. Being a budget display, it touts some pretty nice specs including a 1680x1050 native wide resolution, 700:1 contrast ration, 300cd/m2 brightness and a 5ms response time. It will hit the market overseas in December and likely to come stateside in the following months. This "budget" machine isn't very budget-y at all with the $460 price tag—at least compared to today's Dealzmodo. Lenovo is also in discussion with Bharti for bundling data cards for offering mobile connectivity. Now, laptop users can surf the net while on the move by using a PCMCIA data card. Lenovo and HCL sell 60,000 units every month. Bharti Airtel recently became the first private operator to cross five lakh internet subscribers. Shares in the Chinese tech firm, which climbed 19 percent from July to September, retreated from early highs after the earnings release but were still nearly 1 percent higher by mid-afternoon. Lenovo's global business should stay weak for the foreseeable future as the company has difficulties gaining brand recognition among consumers outside of Asia, analysts say. It has been grappling with expenses arising from a US$1.25 billion purchase of IBM's PC arm, amid competition from bigger rivals Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Lenovo IBM ThinkCentre A60 8700 (VOB46UK)

As designers of the original PC platform, IBM must be able to look at the market today and be proud of what it has managed to spark off. There are more IBM PC compatibles out there than it originally thought possible. Most impressive though, is that despite allowing everyone to use its standard, IBM hasn't been pushed out of the market by hyper-competitive manufacturers. Maybe Apple ought to take a leaf out IBM's book and release MacOS for the PC. Despite this achievement, IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo and so far it's done a great job of maintaining the brand IBM spent so long building up. Although Lenovo still produces its own line of machines, it is also trading under the IBM name, maintaining the Think brand. This is in fact the first ThinkCentre machine we've ever looked at, and I think it looks great.

Lenovo Preloads mInfo's Mobile Search Service

Chinese mobile search service provider mInfo has been selected by Lenovo (LNVGY) to be pre-loaded into its latest mainstream phone. Total shipments in China reached 998,000 units for business-use models and 414,000 for consumer notebooks, Analysys indicated. Notebook PCs priced at 5,001-7,000 yuan (US$628-879) accounted for 34.4% of the total shipment volume last quarter, with the proportion dropping from the preceding quarter. However, the proportion of models for sale priced above 9,000 yuan (US$1,130) decreased on quarter. As a result, the average shipment value per notebook PC dropped from 8,577 yuan (US$1,070) in the second quarter to 8,173 yuan (US$1,026) last quarter.

Softex Teams With Lenovo to Provide a 'Layered Security Solution' ...

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Softex Incorporated, the world's leading supplier of innovative security software products and solutions for computing devices, announces today that Lenovo, one of the largest computer providers in the world, will be reselling the Softex OmniPass solution enabling their customers to centrally manage their fingerprint templates, smart cards, TPM security chips, authentication credentials, and security policies. While the N100 has already made the Merom leap, the newly-unveiled C200 now offers a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor, 15-inch XGA display, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB 5400RPM hard drive, Intel's GMA950 integrated graphics set, 802.11a/b/g wireless, and a DVD Burner to boot. It also sports VGA / S-Video out, a 56k modem, Ethernet, 4-pin FireWire, four USB 2.0 ports, and a PCMCIA slot, but the 6.2-pound weight and 2.5-hour battery life may scare some away. On the ultraportable side, the 4-pound V100 now touts a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor, 12.1-inch WXGA LCD, 100GB 5400RPM hard drive, 6-cell battery, and a dual-layer DVD burner, while sharing the remaining specs with its larger sibling.

Lenovo, Apple lead reliability report

Lenovo and Apple are the most reliable computer makers, according to a new research report. Rescue.com's latest findings rank IBM/Lenovo with a score of 243, followed closely by Apple at 201. The distant third place fell to HP/Compaq with 12 points. Dell, Gateway, and "others" scored 4, -12, and -16 points, respectively. Scores are based on the number of troubleshooting calls received for each make of computer, and results stem from a database of approximately 20,000 calls, according to Macworld UK. "Whether it's due to hardware quality or vendor customer support, clearly IBM/Lenovo and Apple are well ahead of their rivals when it comes to reliability," said David Milman, CEO of Rescue.com. The company is beefing up security, adding Core 2 Duo processors and jumping in on the 802.11n bandwagon. First up is the announcement that Lenovo has teamed up with Utimaco to provide SafeGuard Easy 4.30 with select Thinkpads. The software allows users with the swipe of a finger to encrypt all information on a hard drive and has received FIPS 140-2 certification from the US government. “Statistics show few stolen computers are ever recovered, and companies today know the increasing numbers of stolen notebooks bring a high risk for data and identify theft. Every person carrying unencrypted sensitive information on a notebook PC is at risk. Thinkpad and Utimaco's SafeGuard Easy will help customers better manage this security risk," said Bob Galush, vice president software and peripherals for Lenovo. Next on the agenda is to offer Core 2 Duo processors on its R, T, X and Z Series notebooks.

Lenovo Encrypts Notebooks Hard Drives

Computer maker Lenovo is upping the ante for notebook security, announcing that it is equipping ThinkPad notebooks with security technology from Utimaco which enables users to fully encrypt the contents of their systems' hard drive with a swipe of their finger. The Thinkpads incorporate SafeGuard Easy 4.3 by Utimaco, which encrypts the entire contents of the hard drive can can only be authorized by a fingerprint swipe at startup time, before Windows has booted. According to Lenovo, the drive contents cannot be accessed even if the notebook is disassembled and the drive removed. SafeGuard Easy has received FIPS 140-2 certification from the U.S. government, which is required to sell encryption products to government agencies. At the center of the test image, a constant 1,080 lumens flowed from the M500 to the screen. The drop in power at the edges of the screen was over 100, which meant the difference was technically visible to the naked eye, but very slightly. At the corners of our test image, the light measured 910 lumens, which was still stronger than most projectors’ brightness measure in the center of the screen. Given that at 2.5 pounds the M500 was the lightest unit we looked at, its performance was that much more impressive. Well, not so as most of the company's products sold in the U.S. and Europe still have the IBM name, but that agreement expires in a little over three years. To build its own brand then, Lenovo has signed a marketing agreement [subscription required] with the NBA, just as Dell chose not to renew theirs. Could a deal with the NFL be next?
