Reports indicate that Big Blue offloaded some 300 million shares, or roughly one-quarter of its stake in Lenovo. The sale reduces IBM's total interest in Lenovo below the 10 percent mark. Lenovo burst onto the international computing stage in 2005 with the purchase of IBM's line of desktop and notebook computers and notebook products, including the highly regarded ThinkPad laptop brand. ThinkPad has remained the high-profile performer for Lenovo, which retained IBM's ThinkCentre enterprise PC mark and replaced the struggling Aptiva consumer brand with the 3000 series PC. The move further distances IBM from the desktop computing business it was once literally synonymous with, during a time when second-tier x86 computers were routinely referred to as "IBM clones" or "IBM-compatible." Now a diminishing minority stake is all that remains of IBM's interest in the market it pioneered with the original XT personal computer.

Lenovo Starts a New Engine in Formula One

Lenovo, a leading computer company that creates the best-engineered PCs in the world, today announced a top sponsorship agreement with the AT&T Williams team competing in the Formula One World Championship. A "Lenovo" decal was found on Williams' new 2007 car on January 22, the report said. Lenovo refused to confirm the report with Sina.com. The new car will be unveiled today and Lenovo might become the team's main sponsor, according to the design scheme of the new car. Lenovo might release the information this afternoon, according to the source and the sponsorship might be worth US$40 million a year. William J. Amelio, Lenovo's CEO, said yesterday that the company will announce a new sports sponsor today. He also said Lenovo has prepared an advertisement, which is related to the new sponsorship. As companies look for ways to efficiently use office space, desktop real-estate can quickly become the target of IT managers and business owners. The ThinkCentre A55 SFF desktop is approximately 64 percent smaller than Lenovo’s traditional tower form factor and 25 percent smaller than its conventional small desktop. Its smaller footprint can free up desk space for other items, such as an extra monitor for dual-monitor work environments or a personal printer and scanner. "We are seeing an increased adoption of small form factor desktops in settings such as healthcare, education, financial institutions and call-centers," said Tom Tobul, executive director, desktop marketing, Lenovo.

News Bits: Samsung Releases 60GB 1.8-Inch Hard Drive, Lenovo ...

Samsung recently introduced their 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB per disk capacity and a super-slim form factor that is just 5-millimeters tall. This update to the company's ultraportable X41 Tablet includes a few key upgrades on the usability front, including a touch-screen display, an improved stylus, and the new Active Rotate feature (more on that below). When it's not folded into a tablet, the ThinkPad X60 Tablet also makes a good ultraportable laptop, with a Core Duo processor and decent-size 80GB hard drive. You'll have to pay to have the best tablet on the block, though: the X60 Tablet's price starts at $1,699, but our review unit included a number of upgrades that brought its price to $2,299--and that still didn't include even an external optical drive. If you're looking for a laptop with an optical drive that you can occasionally use as a tablet, look to larger systems such as the Gateway M285-E.

Lenovo tries to step out from Big Blue shadow

Lenovo is trying to consolidate its brand power by removing the IBM logo from popular ThinkPad laptops sold to big corporate customers, local media reported. "We now ask our big customers whether they need the logo. If the answer is no, there won't be IBM marks on the ThinkPads they buy," the Beijing Business Today quoted an unidentified source from the ThinkPad business unit of Lenovo Greater China as saying. Chinese PC giant Lenovo acquired Big Blue's PC unit in 2005. In order to maintain its appeal for global customers, it obtained the right to retain the famous IBM logo on the previously IBM-developed computers, including the Think series, until 2010. Pictures of Lenovo's new ThinkPad X60 without IBM logos have recently appeared on the Internet, drawing speculation about a major branding change for the products.

Lenovo ThinkPad T43 1871 - Pentium M 760 2 GHz - 15

Perfect balance of performance and portability for highly mobile users who work just about anywhere. Gates highlighted the Tosh in his eve-of-CES speech and little wonder as the Portege has a few wowsers in its feature set, namely one of the first sightings of a Windows SideShow auxiliary display, wireless docking courtesy of an ultrawideband near-range radio link, and contrast colouring in the only tones that matter -– black and white. That's just champion, bonny lad. The R400 vied with Asus for most desirable portable in Las Vegas and has now even won kudos from rival vendor Lenovo on the Chinese giant's bog. Lenovo's Matt Kohut gets himself quite worked up by the ingenious mechanism used by Tosh to fight the classic hybrid issue of “floppy hinge", as well as admiring the SideShow feature.

China Wireless Announces Distribution of Lenovo Computer ...

DENVER, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- China Wireless Communications, Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: CWLC - News), is pleased to announce that it has delivered Lenovo computer systems to Tianjin YunKe Science and Trade Company. The new Lenovo Y300 and Y500 notebooks incorporate Lenovo's biometric face recognition technology to enhance data security and allow the notebooks to be used by multiple users seamlessly. Additionally, the Y500 has advanced Dolby Home Theater, a Shuttle Centre for easy navigation between features, a slot-in ODD (a trayless entry for CDs/DVDs) and a TV Tuner card. The Shuttle Center is an audio and video entertainment platform which helps the user navigate between menus without a mouse. The integrated Touch Pad features a wider touch area and provides two modes to avoid the incident touching of Touch Pad when using a mouse. The face recognition feature is supported by Veriface software, which takes a digital snapshot of the user, extracts key features of the user s face, and creates a digital map that becomes the system s 'password'.

Lenovo eyes small towns for retail drive

MUMBAI: Chinese PC major Lenovo is looking at targeting consumers in non-metro and small town areas in India. Lenovo acquired IBM's PC division for $1.75 billion and will sell the ThinkPad and Lenovo brand of desktops in these outlets. Deepak Advani, chief marketing officer, Lenovo told ET, “Besides, increasing the exclusive stores to 100 we will also increase the non-exclusive stores to 500 from 361, by March 2007. We are looking at expanding our presence in the non-metro cities." Lenovo has divided the country into seven geographical regions. “We have developed a network of 1,700 distributors spread across the country, the objective is to target small towns across the country.

Lenovo Launches Free Recycling Service In China

Lenovo's recycling service is available to users of Lenovo brand laptop computers, desktop computers and servers, as well as ThinkPad laptops and ThinkCenter desktop computers. Lenovo says that both business and individual clients can send those types of computers to Lenovo's recycling sites across the country, or they can ask Lenovo's staff to come fetch the devices from their homes or offices. Lenovo will entrust a third party to process and dispose of these collected computers according to relevant Chinese laws and environmental rules, and it will undertake all the relevant cost involved during this process. Chen Shaopeng, senior vice president of Lenovo Group, says that the free recycling service they plan in China is another major step that they have made in environmental protection and it shows Lenovo's responsible attitude towards the society and environment.

Notebook Review : IBM Lenovo 3000 N100

For long, the name IBM has been associated with quality, service and reliability. So when Lenovo bought out the PC division from IBM, certainly many eyebrows were raised, with questions about whether this would impact their QSR (Quality-Service-Reliability) metrics. I did not think up till this point that it would change, but I am quite sadly mistaken. My experience over the past two weeks working on Lenovo laptops and working with their representatives, right from call center people to high-profile men in leading positions like "VP of Web Marketing", has been nothing short of painful, with general sense of I-don't-really-know-what-you-are-talking-about attitude displayed by all and sundry. Given that Lenovo now also markets Thinkpads, one wonders how long will it be before Thinkpads reach the trash-bin too.

State Dept Drops Lenovo, Cites Security Concerns

In another brilliant move by the United States government, nearly 900 Lenovo computers have been removed due to security risks. The computers were planned to be on networks with access to highly classified information. No, they weren't removed because of flaws within the computer, but they were removed is because the US-China Economic and Security Review Commissions showed concern that these PCs could be used for espionage. Get more details after the jump. Even worse, in January 2005 the US Treasury Department was actually asked to investigate the purchase of said Lenovo PCs prior to the purchase because of concerns from the Justice Department. They allowed the purchase to happen, maybe just to spite Americans by wasting more tax-payer money. So, are they trying to say the potential spies are more likely to use Lenovo PCs for thievery rather than Apple or Gateway computers? Or rather, are Lenovo factory employees more likely to install espionage software before the machines get shipped? The State Department sure is talking a lot of techie smack.

IBM Global Financing Helps Saint Leo University Deliver on Lenovo ...

IBM Global Financing, today announced that it will provide a comprehensive leasing solution for Saint Leo University, Florida's first Catholic Institution of higher learning, to help the institution acquire new computers for its more than 13,000 traditional campus and adult continuing education students. .

iPod Success, Lenovo's Harry Potter, Affordable Memorable Gifts

What if Apple and Microsoft had become broad partners? The Lenovo 3000 H series is primarily targeted at the consumers looking for a budget PC. It comes in three different configurations starting from Rs. 25,000 right up to Rs. 35,000. We have the top-most product in that range. Well, let's hop over to the review. Lenevo, most probably, became famous after it bought over the entire PC and laptop manufacturing business from IBM. It is number one PC maker in China and also hopes to do the same trick over here. Budget PC makes up for the majority sales in the Indian market. This sector generally is a very difficult for the branded PC makers to capture, due to lower profit margin and absolutely no-cost for the operating system. Almost 99% of assembled PCs get bundled with pirated software and hence the end consumer doesn't have to bear the cost.

Lenovo ThinkPad goes wide

Hailed as the first ever 15.4-inch widescreen T-series ThinkPad and the lightest among its class, the new T60-series offers consumers a truly versatile laptop for both work and play. The ThinkVantage technologies, which include biometric fingerprint scanning and rescue and recovery, were redesigned to work with the security and backup features offered by Vista. “All of those tools will be tuned up to work with Vista," said Clain Anderson, director of security and affiliated software for the Lenovo software and peripherals business unit.

Lenovo Unveils 350 Euro 22in LCD

It appears that 22 inches is fast becoming the new 20 inches. Following promising and well priced outings from Iiyama, Mirai and the first sighting of Samsungs 225BW anything smaller no longer cuts the mustard. Lenovo is the latest company to spot this growing trend (yes, it does make LCDs) and has entered the field of play with the very promising D221 (I know the pic is small, we're working on it!). Like most 22 inchers on the market the native resolution is an extremely eye friendly/expansive WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) while the 700:1 contrast ratio is above average as is the 5ms response time. Brightness is more typical at 300cd/m2 and the 176 degree horizontal viewing angle is pretty much a defacto these days. Lenovo also supplies the vertical viewing angle (160 degrees) but why youd be straddling your monitor or lying underneath it - without some serious dominatrix/submissive issues - is rather beyond me.

Lenovo Dives into Display Biz with D221 22-inch Monitor

Lenovo is making a bigger splash into the LCD monitor world with the D221 "budget" display. Being a budget display, it touts some pretty nice specs including a 1680x1050 native wide resolution, 700:1 contrast ration, 300cd/m2 brightness and a 5ms response time. It will hit the market overseas in December and likely to come stateside in the following months. This "budget" machine isn't very budget-y at all with the $460 price tag—at least compared to today's Dealzmodo. It is two-inches bigger, and to some, two-inches is humongous. – Travis Hudson A Lenovo 22" Wide screen for 350 euros [Akihabara] .
